Malibu Emergency Declared as Sinkhole Threatens Homes

On September 8, 2026, Malibu city officials declared a local emergency following the appearance of a massive sinkhole at actor Nicolas Cage’s oceanfront property. The sinkhole forced evacuation orders for 31 homes on Sea Level Drive.

Emergency response teams from the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s departments arrived at the scene around 5:45 a.m. The affected property is part of a gated community near Lechuza Beach, according to real estate records.

By the evening, the sinkhole measured approximately 25 feet deep and stretched 30 by 60 feet. Authorities cautioned that conditions might deteriorate due to high tides and rain from Tropical Storm Marie.

The city’s emergency declaration highlighted the imminent threat to nearby properties. Seven homes were marked unsafe due to hazardous conditions. Another 24 residences lost secure vehicle access, significantly impacting emergency response capabilities.

“Emergency personnel access is severely constrained and may be impassable, due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed,” officials stated.

In response, Malibu High School set up a temporary shelter at 30215 Morning View Drive. Utilities such as gas have been shut off, with potential water service disruptions anticipated.

The duration of the evacuation order remains undefined. The National Weather Service has issued high surf and coastal flood advisories until 11 p.m. for several areas, including Malibu’s coast and nearby beaches.

Forecasts from the weather service indicated breaking waves between 4 and 7 feet, with possible peaks up to 8 feet. Dangerous currents and beach erosion are expected, posing risks in low-lying coastal zones.

The emergency declaration also addressed concerns regarding the upcoming El Niño season. Experts warn of heightened risks of record sea levels, flooding, and beach erosion along California’s coast this winter.
