Maggie Goodlander Advances in New Hampshire Congressional Race

Rep. Maggie Goodlander, representing New Hampshire, has secured her spot for the general election in a district that typically leans Democratic. This district covers the western region of New Hampshire, stretching from Massachusetts to the Canadian border. Goodlander, succeeding retiring Rep. Ann Kuster, is married to Jacob Sullivan, a former Biden National Security Adviser.

New Hampshire’s governor’s office is mainly Republican, though the state’s congressional seats frequently favor Democrats. The district has been under Democratic control since 2013, with earlier representation by Republican Charles Bass, whose tenure was briefly interrupted by a Democratic representative in the mid-1990s.

Goodlander triumphed over New Hampshire State Rep. Paige Beauchemin in the primary. An independent candidate is also running in the general election. Lily Tang Williams emerged as the winner from the Republican primary.

Jacob Sullivan, Goodlander’s spouse, had a significant role in the White House, notably appearing during key foreign policy decisions, including the Afghanistan withdrawal in 2021, the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and managing U.S.-China relations.

Beauchemin challenged Goodlander from a progressive stance, arguing that Goodlander’s first term lacked progressive achievements. The district includes rural areas and cities such as Pittsburg in northern New Hampshire.

With Rep. Chris Pappas shifting from the House to pursue a Senate seat vacated by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire’s political landscape is undergoing substantial changes.
