MAGA Women Lead Charge Against Misconduct in Congress

At the beginning of President Trump’s second term, many would not have expected an uprising in the Republican-controlled Congress against sexual misconduct within its ranks. Predicting that a small group of MAGA women would spearhead this effort might have seemed equally unlikely. Yet that is precisely the current situation.

Representatives Lauren Boebert, Nancy Mace, and Anna Paulina Luna have played a crucial role. Last month, their actions led to the resignation of two colleagues accused of misconduct: Tony Gonzales, a Republican from Texas, and Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California. Last fall, these women, along with Marjorie Taylor Greene, were instrumental in securing votes compelling the Justice Department to release files on Jeffrey Epstein, even against pressure from Mr. Trump to withdraw.

These women, including Kat Cammack of Florida, have been advocating for measures against Representative Cory Mills, a Florida Republican with a restraining order from an ex-girlfriend. In the previous #MeTooCongress movement during Trump’s first term, Democratic women led the effort, but partisan polarization diminished momentum. The G.O.P., shaped by MAGA machismo, has grown more resistant to women’s rights and more lenient towards misconduct.

This scenario makes Ms. Luna and her peers well-suited to initiate a #Me2.0 in Congress. Their MAGA credentials provide them leverage on such sensitive issues. Unlike moderate colleagues, they can’t be easily dismissed. Their efforts could address entrenched cultural problems in Congress.

Politically, this strategy might benefit them. MAGA lawmakers know how to command attention and persist in rallying outrage, which aligns with their disruptive brand. Annoying the party’s establishment often bolsters their iconoclastic position.

Ms. Luna takes prominent roles on challenging issues. Aside from confronting sexual misconduct, she is a vocal supporter of banning congressional stock trading.
