Luigi Mangione appeared in New York City court for a hearing on the jury selection process in his murder trial. He is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Prosecutors have evidence linking Mangione to the crime, including a gun and a notebook with writings on corporate America and the health insurance industry found after Thompson’s murder.
Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, submitted a court filing challenging the media access rules, which limit attendance to 68 journalists. She argues this violates Mangione’s constitutional right to a public trial. Concerns were raised that the court or district attorney might selectively allow certain reporters, compromising fairness.
The filing presented three main objections:
- The partial closing of the trial by not using an available overflow courtroom.
- Selective permission for reporters without defense input.
- Decisions made without offering the defense an opportunity to be heard.
During a pre-trial hearing, Agnifilo described the media access setup as arbitrary, lacking constitutional sufficiency. She demanded a public hearing on the issue, access to the selection criteria, and the list of six journalists designated for jury selection. The defense also seeks to know what efforts were made to secure an overflow space and requests a live broadcast of the trial since overflow accommodation is unavailable.
