The Unveiling of the Statue
Loyola University Chicago marked the start of the new academic year with the unveiling of a statue of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt. This event coincided with her birthday. The dedication ceremony was held on August 21, 2026, in memory of Sister Jean, who passed away in October at 106 years old.
Sister Jean’s Legacy
Sister Jean taught at Mundelein College before it merged with Loyola in 1991. An alumni, Margaret Mary, who attended Mundelein, was present at the unveiling. The statue embodies Sister Jean’s significant contribution to the university.
The Artist Behind the Statue
Sculptor Littleton Alston created the statue of Sister Jean. He attended the unveiling event, highlighting the emotional connection many feel with Sister Jean’s legacy. The event also featured symbolic gestures, like buttons worn in her honor. These tributes reflect Sister Jean’s enduring impact on the campus community.
