After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, thousands continue to suffer long-term health issues linked to environmental toxins from the disaster site. Research suggests that the massive dust cloud that enveloped lower Manhattan is tied to conditions such as cancer, respiratory disease, gastroesophageal reflux, and mental disorders.
According to Alejandro Azofeifa, a health scientist at the World Trade Center Health Program, many people at the crash sites and nearby areas were exposed to harmful materials due to the dust and fumes from fires. Over 350 hazards were identified at disaster areas as per the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act (2010).
The review, published in JAMA on September 10, noted that these health conditions can appear years after exposure, stressing the need for continued clinical monitoring and research to address evolving health needs. Recent data states that over 9,400 people have died from 9/11-related illnesses.
Study Findings
The CDC found that after 25 years, more than 155,000 responders and survivors are enrolled in the WTC Health Program, receiving medical monitoring and treatment for 9/11-related conditions free of charge. Enrollment has grown by an average of 6,500 annually since 2012. Of those enrolled, 67% are certified for at least one health condition related to the attacks.
Those exposed directly to the attacks have higher rates of chronic conditions and poorer quality of life compared to the general population. They require more complex medical care and have increased healthcare utilization and costs.
Health Conditions Linked to Dust Exposure
Azofeifa noted that exposure to the hazards from the attacks can lead to various health conditions, including traumatic injuries, aerodigestive disorders, cancers, and mental health issues.
The Composition of Toxic Dust
CDC research shows that the dust cloud contained harmful toxins such as asbestos, lead, cement, glass fibers, and benzene. The collapse of the towers released particulate matter and volatile compounds, contributing to air pollution. Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma and other cancers, while lead exposure can impact multiple body systems.
Harmful Effects of Dust
Dr. Jacqueline Moline stated the dust’s alkaline nature allowed it to deeply penetrate body tissues, causing irritation in sinuses, throat, and lungs. This led to conditions like asthma and lung scarring. Long-term exposure resulted in cancers, especially blood cancers.
Health impacts varied based on individuals’ reaction and exposure levels. The findings underscore the need for long-term care and preventive measures in disaster response.
Response Strategies
CDC researchers stress the importance of continued surveillance and coordinated care systems. Azofeifa advocates for early preventive action to mitigate health effects from environmental disasters. This includes using protective equipment and avoiding toxic exposures.
Portal Launch for Public Record Access
New York City launched an online database with records on air quality and health, addressing transparency issues around the attacks’ long-term consequences. This portal will expand public access to documents related to the city’s response.
The portal will grow incrementally, supported by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s fiscal budget. Comedian Jon Stewart praised the efforts, highlighting advocacy for 9/11 responders impacted by toxins.
Database Contents
The database contains air quality reports, contamination records, and correspondence that evidences asbestos findings months after the attacks. It also includes the Harding Memo discussing potential liability for exposure claims.
