The Impact of Lindsey Graham’s Death on U.S. Politics

News from China has reported the death of South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham as a noteworthy event for the Republican Party. His passing marks a potential shift in American foreign policy, especially concerning President Donald Trump’s influence. A statement from his office confirmed that Graham died from a sudden illness, a detail that has drawn attention to the contest for his vacant seat.

Graham’s Political Legacy

Graham was known for advocating interventionist conservatism with a strong U.S. presence globally. He opposed growing adversarial influences including China’s alignment with Russia and had been openly critical of China’s role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Graham consistently warned against the Chinese Communist Party’s influence on U.S. politics.

Relations with China and Other Nations

Graham frequently visited Pacific region capitals to support U.S. interests in Taiwan. His critical stance on China’s economic policies aligned with Trump’s trade wars during both of his presidential terms. Although Graham became a close ally of Trump, their views differed on America’s global role. Ren Yi, a Chinese commentator, highlighted this contrast by describing Trump as a supporter of a multipolar world, whereas Graham supported maintaining U.S. hegemony.

“Graham’s death personifies the accelerated demise of the American unipolar order.” – Ren Yi

Graham was dubbed a “triple hawk” for his hard-line stance against Russia, Iran, and China. He defended Trump’s decision on the Iran conflict and was a strong backer of Israel and Ukraine. In his last public appearance in Kyiv, he urged China to help end Russia’s military actions, stating China’s global influence.

China’s Reaction

Chinese state media referred to Graham as a GOP “hawk” and noted his role in efforts to economically punish those trading in sanctioned Russian resources. On social media, many Chinese commentators expressed criticism following his death.

Hu Xijin, former editor of the Global Times, commented that while Graham was not widely known among Chinese citizens, he was often mentioned and not well liked.

Support for Taiwan

Graham supported Taiwan consistently. He maintained the U.S.’s policy on possible military involvement in the Taiwan Strait crisis and highlighted cross-party support for Taiwan in Congress. Despite criticism from state-run news outlets, Graham linked U.S.-Taiwan relations to enhanced trade.

In a significant 2022 visit to Taipei, he urged the purchase of Boeing jets, highlighting economic ties with the U.S. He sponsored bills for aid and expedited arms sales to Taiwan. Following a summit between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Graham stated the importance of maintaining the status quo with Taiwan.

Taiwan’s leadership expressed sorrow at Graham’s passing, with President Lai Ching-te and former leader Tsai acknowledging his friendship and support. Meanwhile, Trump announced the lowering of U.S. flags in honor of Graham’s contributions.
