LeBron James’ eighth season with the Los Angeles Lakers concluded with a four-game sweep in the Western Conference semifinals by the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder. This loss has sparked questions about his future in the NBA, including the possibility of a 24th season.
James has yet to decide on his next move but plans to spend time with his family before making a decision. On May 11, he stated, “I don’t know what the future holds for me, obviously, as it stands right now tonight. I’ve got a lot of time now. I think I said it last year after we lost to Minnesota. I’ll go back and recalibrate with my family and talk with them and spend some time with them, and then obviously when the time comes, you guys will know what I decide to do.”
Speculation about his future continues, with potential links to teams like the Lakers, Warriors, and a possible return to the Cavaliers, where he began his illustrious career.

On May 13, James attended Game Four of the Eastern Conference Second Round Playoffs at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. If he decides to return to his home state, it would be his third stint with the Cavaliers. He previously rejoined them in 2014, following a successful period with the Miami Heat, leading Cleveland to its first NBA Championship in 2016.
The Cavaliers suffered a defeat in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks. Despite this, James hinted at a possible move back to Cleveland through social media engagement.
There are hurdles to a Cleveland return, primarily financial. James would need to accept a pay cut, assuming the Cavaliers could negotiate a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers. The Cavaliers already have significant financial commitments, with players like Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley set to earn over $50 million annually next season. James Harden holds a $42.3 million player option, and Jarrett Allen might account for roughly $28 million against the salary cap next season.
During the 2025-26 regular season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game.
