Leadership Changes in the Defense Department During Pete Hegseth’s Tenure

Since Pete Hegseth assumed the role of defense secretary at the beginning of the second Trump administration, notable changes have occurred in the leadership of the U.S. military. At least 20 generals, admirals, and civilian defense leaders have been fired or have left their positions.

High-Profile Departures

Significant figures in the Army, Navy, and Air Force have either been dismissed or retired unexpectedly. These include many top-ranking officers and leaders of key units. Among those who have departed are female and Black officers, which some sources claim have been disproportionately removed from promotion lists.

General Charles Q. Brown was fired from his position as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Brown, a former fighter pilot, held over 3,100 flight hours and was renowned as the second Black general to occupy this role.

Admiral Lisa Franchetti and General James Slife were also removed from their roles without previously specified reasons. Franchetti was the first woman to join the Joint Chiefs of Staff, receiving her promotion in 2023.

Additional prominent figures that departed include Generals David Allvin and Randy George, and Lieutenant Generals Joseph B. Berger III and Charles Plummer.

“The status quo hasn’t worked very well at the Pentagon,” Hegseth commented, emphasizing the need for new leadership.

Clashes Over Leadership and Policy

Hegseth’s criticisms of military officers focused on their attention to diversity initiatives. Prior to his nomination, he stated his intention to remove individuals involved in DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) initiatives.

Many leaders, such as Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who resigned this year, have expressed concerns over Hegseth’s decisions, suggesting they impede efforts to modernize the Army for upcoming warfare challenges.

Impact on Civilian Leadership

Among civilian leaders, John Phelan, Navy Secretary, was relieved from his role in April. Conflicts during his tenure involved administration strategies on shipbuilding.

Dan Driscoll, former Army Secretary, resigned amidst tensions related to modernization initiatives and key figures being pushed out of their roles by Hegseth. Joe Kasper was transferred to focus on “special projects” after sharing sensitive information.

Accusations and Investigations

Suspected media leak incidents led to several figures being ousted, including Colin Carroll, Dan Caldwell, and Darin Selnick, who were implicated in a leak investigation yet questioned its legitimacy.

Former Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot departed, citing difficulty during his time in the department.
