Leadership Change at UCLA Athletics Amidst Financial Challenges

UCLA announced a significant leadership change in its athletic department with the firing of Martin Jarmond, former athletic director. Tim Harris, who previously led business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers, will take over as CEO and athletic director. Harris is a UCLA alumnus and former men’s soccer team player. He takes the helm without a salary.

The decision was outlined in a letter from UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk, describing it as a new direction for the university’s sports programs. Jarmond, who served for six years, departs immediately despite the Bruins securing three NCAA championships last season, notable achievements including the women’s basketball team winning their inaugural title.

Harris, aged 64, brings extensive experience from his 35-year tenure with the Lakers. He left the team after its sale to Dodgers owner Mark Walter. This change comes amidst the university’s ongoing financial deficits in athletics, amounting to $241 million over seven years. The athletic department’s shortfall reduced to $21.6 million in the fiscal year 2025.

Chancellor Frenk emphasized the critical financial situation, noting that UCLA Athletics needs a sustainable financial model to preserve program diversity, foster new opportunities, and maintain self-sufficiency. With the rapid evolution of college sports driven by aspects like athletes cashing in on their name, image, and likeness, Frenk stated the importance of a proactive approach for UCLA’s athletics model.

Looking forward, UCLA seeks to lead in the collegiate sports landscape. Although previous athletic director Jarmond will not witness his last major coaching hire, Bob Chesney, take charge of reinvigorating UCLA’s football team, the Bruins are scheduled to open their season against California.
