Democratic lawmakers generally affirm the United States as an exceptional country, even as they voice disagreements with President Donald Trump. In interviews with Fox News Digital, they highlighted the nation’s enduring principles and freedoms. “The freedoms that we have and the fact that anyone should be able to get ahead for them and their family based on the laws we have,” said Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wisc.
This discussion arises as the country approaches its 250th Independence Day. It reveals a mismatch between Democratic confidence in American values and their distrust of the Trump administration’s leadership. Most expressed pride in their citizenship, though Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, chose not to elaborate.
Rep. Al Green expressed his pride by noting, “I am very proud to tell you that impeachment is an option to remove a reckless, ruthless, lawless president.”
Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, also highlighted the need to protect democracy from authoritarianism: “We’re the greatest country on earth… we promote our values, our liberties, and justice and freedom.” He affirmed that their commitment to perfecting the union is part of its democratic success.
Similarly, Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., spoke on U.S. exceptionalism.”This is a great country… a country of immigrants,” he stated, emphasizing contributions made by immigrants.
In contrast, Republican lawmakers readily affirmed their pride based on founding principles. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wisc., attributed American prosperity to the Constitution, stating, “Our Constitution and all the freedoms we have… results in us being so much wealthier than other countries.” Furthermore, he highlighted material wealth and Christian values as key aspects of American life.
Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., expressed belief in America’s commitment to peace and strength. “We’re a nation willing to understand peace through strength,” Mills said, emphasizing a national readiness to defend freedoms unmatched elsewhere.
