Lane Kiffin is facing challenges as LSU considers adopting a rule from the Big Ten that would prevent former NFL players from participating in the SEC. This potential rule affects Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, two players recently released from NFL teams and granted a fifth-year college eligibility by a court order.
The SEC may soon decide on this rule, which could restrict Wright and Harris from playing in the conference. Disobeying such a rule might lead to significant penalties for LSU, including disqualification from the SEC season or a steep $1 million fine, as reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. The SEC emphasizes maintaining the distinction between college and professional athletes.
“College athletes, not former professional athletes, have been at the heart of the Southeastern Conference. Individuals who choose to leave college athletics, sign professional playing contracts, and compete professionally should not then be permitted to return to college competition,” the SEC stated.
The SEC insists that allowing former professionals to return would blur lines between college and professional sports, affecting competition and opportunities for current student-athletes. The league supports the Protect College Sports Act to resolve eligibility confusion.
Meanwhile, Lane Kiffin expressed his frustration with conferences not permitting returning players to partake. On the “Pat McAfee Show,” he criticized the selective adherence to court orders that allow players to return, questioning the validity of such decisions.
“All court orders have been followed,” Kiffin said. “You can’t decide, ‘Hey, I like that injunction, I don’t like that one, that player I kind of like, and I like the way that they got him eligible, so we’re going to follow those rules, not these.’ It really doesn’t work that way.”
The situation leaves uncertainty regarding Kiffin’s next move, as retaliatory measures from the SEC could have severe consequences for LSU’s standing in the championships.
