Kevin Durant Avoids WNBA Gender Eligibility Debate

Kevin Durant expressed disinterest in the WNBA’s gender eligibility debate during the Houston Rockets Media Day. Reporters questioned him about the campaign led by his former fellow Thunder player, Enes Kanter Freedom, and ex-NBA first-round pick Royce White, aimed at preventing biological men from participating in women’s sports.

Durant redirected focus to the WNBA’s recent advancements in sneaker deals and revenue growth. He did not comment on the controversial topic of biological males entering female leagues. “All that stuff used to be noise, man. WNBA is flourishing,” Durant stated.

He praised the accomplishments of women athletes in the league, citing their increased earnings, visibility, and brand partnerships. “These women have brands for themselves, the business women for themselves outside the game,” Durant added.

Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White have vocally challenged the WNBA’s gender eligibility policies for months. They underscored these issues by announcing plans to “identify as women” and declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

Their announcement met with criticism from both critics and WNBA players, dismissing it as a publicity stunt. Kanter Freedom defended the move as a means to protect female athletes. White criticized the current collective bargaining agreement for relying on vague language about gender identity, arguing it should explicitly require players to be biological females.

Their ideological disagreements surfaced publicly at Wintrust Arena in August when Kanter Freedom engaged in a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud, resulting in his ejection and a venue ban. This ban received support from some players, including Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink.

Kanter Freedom and White continue to push for the league to establish clear policies on player eligibility. However, Durant remains uninterested, preferring to focus solely on sports and the league’s progress.
