Kelsey Plum’s Uncertain Future with the Los Angeles Sparks

Two off-seasons ago, All-Star guard Kelsey Plum made a significant decision. She requested a trade from the Las Vegas Aces, the team with which she won two WNBA titles. Her request led to a move to the Los Angeles Sparks in January 2025.

Last summer, Plum shared her thoughts with Sue Bird. She stated that her offseason decision was driven by self-belief and the desire to impact winning at the highest level.

Since joining the Sparks, Plum has worked hard to guide them to their first playoff appearance since 2020. However, despite her efforts, questionable personnel decisions have hampered the team’s progress. This situation could see Plum looking for opportunities elsewhere.

“Sources around the league, speaking anonymously because they are not authorized to comment publicly, indicate that the 31-year-old guard does not plan to re-sign with the Sparks,” reported Annie Costabile for The Athletic. Plum signed a one-year contract worth $999,999 during free agency. Both Plum and her agent, Zack Miller of WME Basketball, have declined to comment on her future.

The WNBA trade deadline is August 2. Costabile noted that while Plum is a strong trade prospect, the Sparks have not entered serious trade discussions involving her.

Plum began the season as the leading scorer and offensive force in the WNBA. Unfortunately, injuries have limited her presence on the court. She sprained her ankle in late May, which led to her missing a week. After returning for six games in June, a lower left leg injury sidelined her again from June 24 onward.

Plum’s injury history is not significant, so her future in free agency looks promising, regardless of whether the Sparks trade her.
