Kamala Harris on Possible 2028 Run Highlights Midterm Importance

Former Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the possibility of running for president again in 2028 during a conversation with NAACP leaders in Detroit. She emphasized the significance of the upcoming midterm elections, stating, “’28 won’t matter if we don’t get through ’26.” 

In a fireside chat moderated by Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony and Rev. Dr. Genetta Y. Hatcher, Harris responded to questions about her political future. She made it clear that, as of now, she hasn’t decided on a 2028 presidential bid. Her focus is on the immediate political landscape.

Harris expressed a strong belief in the power of voters, urging them to engage actively in the 2026 midterms. “I’m a big believer that when you focus on the thing out there, you trip on the thing over here,” she noted, highlighting the importance of focusing on the present challenges.

The event in Detroit was one of two that day for Harris. She also participated in a roundtable discussion on Black maternal health and healthcare costs alongside Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. In this session, she criticized former President Donald Trump’s healthcare policies while expressing her support for El-Sayed’s campaign.

Harris, who became the Democratic presidential nominee in 2024 after President Joe Biden paused his re-election efforts, eventually lost to Trump in that election.

While Harris has left the door open for a potential future presidential run, her current priority remains the 2026 elections. Her engagement with voters and emphasis on immediate political action underscores her strategic focus.
