Matt Damon experienced a major transformation for his role in Christopher Nolan’s film, “The Odyssey.” This journey led to an unexpected yet significant lifestyle change. On Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Damon revealed that removing gluten from his diet had profoundly affected his well-being.
“It’s a complete, complete lifestyle change,” Damon stated about gaining a muscular build in his fifties. He described the process as intense and straightforward. “Just put your foot on the gas and that’s it. And that’s the only way to do it,” he added, emphasizing the importance of consistent effort and a reduced food intake.
Damon eliminated gluten from his diet, which he said changed his life permanently. Poehler mentioned how their generation grew up unaware of food sensitivities, a sentiment Damon echoed, acknowledging the unrecognized impact gluten had on him. Though he misses bread, beer, pasta, and pizza, the improvement in his health was significant.
In preparation for “The Odyssey,” Damon undertook a strict regimen to portray the legendary Odysseus. He discussed this during an appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. The program included cutting his weight to 167 pounds, guided by Nolan’s vision of a lean but strong character.
“I stopped eating gluten,” Damon shared, clarifying a shift that influenced his weight management. Back in high school, he weighed similarly, showing how rigorous his regimen was involving tailored workouts and diets.
This isn’t Damon’s first encounter with weight transformation. For the 1996 film “Courage Under Fire,” he lost between 40 and 50 pounds in a rigorous 100-day schedule. The drastic weight drop posed health risks, with a doctor warning about potential permanent heart damage.
Working with a personal trainer was crucial for Damon in achieving his fitness goals. “Trainers are like, ‘What are we doing?’ And they can kind of do anything,” he commented, highlighting the importance of setting clear objectives.
