Less than a week after a severe injury leading to the loss of his leg, the courageous Florida K-9 Ace returned to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The 7-year-old German shepherd, on duty since March 2020, was shot while deputies were attempting to arrest Angel Bowers, 27.
Bowers reportedly fired at least four shots at three deputies during the attempted arrest after failing to appear in court. Deputies killed Bowers at the scene. The incident resulted in the heroic actions of K-9 Ace, who was shot in the left front leg, causing extensive damage.
“Ace protected the deputies, but sustained a significant injury to his left leg,” remarked Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
Deputy Natalie Oestreich, Ace’s handler, attended to his wounds and transported him to safety. Following this, Ace was stabilized at Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Lakeland. From there, a helicopter took him to the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch. Veterinarians performed an operation, lasting several hours, to amputate his injured leg.
On social media, the sheriff’s office shared a heartwarming video of Ace energetically interacting with deputies as he prepared to leave the medical center. Despite his ordeal, Ace showed tenacity and spirit.
“Upon waking, Ace tried walking on his own,” the sheriff’s office noted. “Not even a camera could keep up with him!”
Ace then returned to the sheriff’s office for the first time since the incident. Sheriff Judd expressed admiration for Ace and Deputy Oestreich, emphasizing their pivotal role in keeping three deputies safe.
“We are immensely proud of Natalie and Ace,” Judd stated. “They stood between good and evil, saving lives.”
Although Ace will retire from law enforcement, he will continue recovering with Oestreich’s care before she resumes her duties. The sheriff’s office paid tribute to Ace in a social media post, affirming his legacy.
“His law enforcement days are complete, but Ace will forever be our hero,” the statement read.
