Judge to Decide on Media Access in Tyler Robinson’s Preliminary Hearing

3 weeks ago 0

A Utah judge is expected to make a decision on Monday regarding the restriction of media and public access to parts of an upcoming hearing for Tyler Robinson, accused of murdering Charlie Kirk. The defense has appealed to Judge Tony Graf to limit the preliminary hearing, scheduled for July 6-10, where prosecutors will need to demonstrate sufficient evidence for a trial.

The case has concentrated on issues of media access with Robinson’s legal team seeking to seal various exhibits proposed by the prosecution. According to the defense, these exhibits could influence the potential jury pool negatively before trial proceedings. Robinson, aged 23 and from southwestern Utah, faces charges including aggravated murder for the September 10th killing of Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus.

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty if Robinson is found guilty. At present, Robinson has not entered a plea. The prosecutors argue the hearing should remain open but agree some media restrictions on exhibits are necessary. These include forensic reports, surveillance footage, witness statement recordings, autopsy results, and alleged incriminating messages sent by Robinson.

Investigators have identified DNA linked to Robinson on the rifle used in the crime, on the fired cartridge casing, two unfired cartridges, and a towel that wrapped the rifle. Prosecutors also highlight a note Robinson allegedly left for his partner, stating, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
