Journalists and Press Freedom Groups Urge WHCA to Defend Press Freedom

Hundreds of retired journalists and eight organizations advocating for press freedom have called on the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) to firmly oppose the Trump administration’s recent media attacks at its upcoming rescheduled dinner. President Donald Trump confirmed his attendance at the event, following its abrupt interruption in April due to a gunman attempting to assassinate him at the Washington Hilton.

The rescheduled dinner will be held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington, previously known as the Trump International Hotel, accompanied by heightened security measures. A letter addressing the WHCA highlights intensified attacks on journalists and press freedom from the administration since the initial dinner.

Organized by former ABC News correspondent Lisa Stark and producer Ian Cameron, the letter emphasizes disturbing actions such as recent Justice Department subpoenas targeting New York Times journalists investigating safety concerns regarding the president’s Qatari-gifted Air Force One jet. Subpoenas extended to the journalists’ phone records, implicating even their family members.

The signatories strongly urge the WHCA to resist threats from Trump to revoke licenses of broadcasters defying his wishes. The letter states, ‘Our message to the White House Correspondents’ Association is now more urgent: forcefully stand up for freedom of the press in front of the President, publicly defend the journalists he attacks, and vow to resist his administration’s concerted effort to undermine the First Amendment.’

WHCA President Weijia Jiang has characterized the dinner’s purpose as celebrating the First Amendment and honoring journalists who diligently protect it. However, the letter criticizes the notion of celebrating the amendment in front of a president who consistently undermines it.

The signatories assert, ‘We urge the WHCA to condemn the administration’s actions from the podium and pledge to fight all attempts by his administration to undermine this core pillar of a functioning democracy.’

Groups supporting the letter include the Society of Professional Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, the Coalition for Women in Journalism, the Radio Television Digital News Association, and the Media and Democracy Project. About 520 retired journalists signed the letter, having previously backed a similar letter in April.

President Trump acknowledged his attendance at the dinner on Friday, viewing the event as a demonstration of ‘Strength and Fortitude.’ In his post on Truth Social, Trump stated, ‘This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling.’ However, he remains undecided about delivering his original speech, which was expected to criticize the press.

Trump added, ‘I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out. In any event, it will be a ‘HOT’ ticket!’
