Joshua Báez made an unforgettable entry into Major League Baseball by hitting a home run on his very first swing. His powerful hit traveled an estimated 450 feet, demonstrating his immense talent and earning a smile directed toward his team’s dugout. St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol commented on Báez’s calm demeanor, pointing out how unique the moment was.
Making his mark in a way never seen before, Báez became the first player to launch a home run in each of his initial three at-bats in the majors. His impressive performance led the Cardinals to an 8-4 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Before the game, Báez had been brought up from Triple-A Memphis. In attendance were 30 family members, including his mother, who celebrated the special moment at Wrigley Field despite the rain.
“It’s unreal,” said Báez, who is just 23 years old. “To not only get a hit but three home runs? It’s crazy.” His debut included home runs achieved with flair from three different pitchers, each displaying his batting prowess. His first home run came from Matthew Boyd’s pitch, traveling 449 feet into the bleachers. His subsequent at-bats included a solo shot down the left-field line and another hit to the opposite field, earning him five RBIs.
According to Major League Baseball, Báez is the first player in modern history to achieve three home runs in his debut. While it remains unclear if this feat occurred before 1901 due to incomplete records, it’s a remarkable achievement in modern times. Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised Báez’s performance, noting his power in the minor leagues, where he led with 34 home runs from Triple-A, including four multihomer games.
Báez is the ninth player this season to debut for the Cardinals and the 11th in the team’s history to homer in his first career at-bat. The previous Cardinal to achieve a home run on the first pitch was former pitcher Adam Wainwright in 2006.
