Josh Turek, a Paralympic gold medalist and state legislator, has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Iowa. The Associated Press reports his victory over Zach Wahls, a fellow state legislator known for his progressive stance and a notable speech defending his lesbian parents when he was a teenager.
Turek, who labels himself as a ‘prairie populist’, emphasizes his readiness to attract votes from independents and Republicans. At 47, he describes himself as ‘battle-tested’ due to his performance in the past elections, where he claimed to have outperformed President Trump’s results by 50% in Iowa, showcasing his ability to win in a challenging environment.
The upcoming election will see Turek competing against Representative Ashley Hinson. Hinson, who represents Iowa’s northwest corner, has garnered significant support with the Senate Leadership Fund, the primary super PAC for Senate Republicans, pledging at least $29 million to bolster her campaign. This financial backing indicates a potentially close race.
Democrats are feeling optimistic about their prospects this year in Iowa. Despite Republicans holding all congressional seats, the governor’s office, and both chambers of the state legislature, Turek’s nomination offers fresh hope for change in Iowa’s political landscape.
