For nearly five years, Jessica Sanchez endured persistent symptoms such as constipation, excessive bleeding, night sweats, and extreme fatigue. These were often dismissed by doctors. At 40, and as a mother of two, a colonoscopy finally revealed a tumor. Biopsies confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma, the prevalent form of rectal cancer. This cancer develops in the glandular cells lining the large intestine’s final section.
“After waking up, learning about my tumor, I felt both validated and scared. It confirmed my intuition,” Sanchez stated. She expressed frustration over the prolonged period of undiagnosed symptoms. The physical impacts further complicated her quest for answers.
“Being a mom to two special-needs children, and having no energy, poor sleep, and a malfunctioning body despite lifestyle changes, is very distressing,” Sanchez elaborated.
Doctors conducted a biopsy during her procedure but informed her she would receive results at a follow-up the next week. Currently, she is undergoing CT and MRI scans to assess the cancer’s stage and spread.
Sanchez reflected on her diagnostic journey and acknowledged that she often accepted reassurances attributing symptoms to minor issues against her instincts. “I regret not advocating fiercely, demanding second opinions or documenting refusals,” she said. “I urge women to be loud and disruptive. Passivity and compliance lead to dismissals. You deserve answers.”
As she navigates her cancer diagnosis, Sanchez draws strength from family and friends’ unwavering support. She finds meaning in their willingness to help. “Experiencing both deep sadness and immense gratitude side by side,” she remarked.
Sharing her experience online, Sanchez aims to raise awareness of medical dismissal challenges and encourage advocacy. “I’ve avoided expressing my pain online,” she said. “But if I want to truly connect and aid others, I must be open and overcome my fear of exposure.”
