An ongoing investigation is examining a shooting that occurred Monday evening involving federal agents on the Lower West Side near Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway. The FBI released a statement late Monday night confirming that it is reviewing a shooting involving an agent near West 18th Street and Union Avenue. In line with FBI policy, the agency’s Inspection Division is conducting the review, according to the statement.
The scene of the shooting, located at the 1800 block of South Union Avenue, saw a robust police presence, with the outbound Dan Ryan 18th Street exit being blocked as of 8:15 PM Monday night. According to a statement from the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers responded to the scene and the department’s Investigative Response Team was present to document the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the incident or the reasons for federal agents’ involvement. It is also unclear if there were injuries. A spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department confirmed one person was transported from 18th Street and Union early Monday evening but did not provide details on their condition. Further information regarding the shooting remains unavailable.
Local resident Marina Corona described her observations. She mentioned witnessing a swarm of police vehicles but did not hear the shooting itself. “I looked out the window, and I just saw this army of cars,” she noted while walking her dog along 18th Street, which was still cordoned off by police tape. Although she is accustomed to hearing sirens, Corona stated that she had never witnessed such an intense police presence in her lifelong residence in the area. Her initial reaction was to secure her home by turning off lights and locking the door.
An Illinois State Police spokesperson stated that they assisted with traffic control following the shooting at 18th and Union. The FBI reiterated its commitment to thoroughly investigating all shootings involving its agents or task force members, although additional details were not provided, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
