Doug Burgum Talks Vandalism on Katie Miller’s Podcast

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum recently addressed the vandalism of the National Mall’s Reflecting Pool. He spoke with podcast host Katie Miller in a new episode of “The Katie Miller Podcast.” This discussion came after his clash with CNN’s Dana Bash on the issue.

During the podcast, Miller raised questions about the vandalism, highlighting the presence of numerous cameras and the National Guard in the vicinity. She questioned how the vandalism occurred without being captured. Burgum explained there were initially few cameras around the Reflecting Pool. The pool, part of the Lincoln Memorial, had never faced vandalism before.

“We had very few or no cameras at the beginning, because we have cameras all over our monuments. The Reflecting Pool is part of the Lincoln Memorial, but there had never been vandalism on this helpless, harmless Reflecting Pool before,” Burgum explained.

Steps Taken to Address Vandalism

Burgum noted that the White House responded by enhancing surveillance measures. Mobile camera stations and towers were installed after the vandalism incidents. These measures captured secondary activity. Burgum revealed that vandalism started as early as June 9. Authorities refrained from publicizing these events to avoid copycat incidents. He assured that camera coverage has improved.

Incidents Following Trump’s Renovation Plans

Former US Olympian David Hearn was indicted in connection with alleged vandalism activities. Workers were seen applying a blue protective coating to the Reflecting Pool. Amid criticism of President Trump’s renovation plans in Washington, D.C., vandals targeted the National Mall with several damaging actions. This included marking the mall with a cryptic “8647,” blood-written messages on the Washington Monument, and damage to the Reflecting Pool.

These incidents followed President Trump’s order for the restoration and repainting of the Reflecting Pool. This initiative was ahead of America’s 250th celebration. Protesters responded with vandalism, leaving “razor-blade cuts” and throwing fencing into the pool.

Members of the National Guard were observed near the pool as workers applied the new paint. This action was part of an effort to paint the drained pool with “American Flag Blue.” The renovation aimed to prepare for America’s significant anniversary.
