Indiana Fever Claims Victory Over Chicago Sky Amid On-Court Drama

Caitlin Clark showcased an outstanding performance as she scored 37 points, complemented by Kelsey Mitchell’s 30 points, propelling the Indiana Fever to a commanding 113-90 victory over the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena. Clark’s impressive display included a career-high eight 3-pointers, contributing to Indiana’s franchise-record 18 3-pointers in the game. She also recorded 10 assists, playing a pivotal role in her team’s success.

This victory marks the conclusion of a challenging 3-2 road trip for the Fever, having played their third game in four nights. Previously, they had experienced back-to-back defeats. Natasha Cloud led the charge for the Chicago Sky with 16 points and seven assists, while Azurá Stevens added 14 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Sky were eliminated from playoff contention, influenced by a win from the Washington Mystics later that evening.

The Fever had to make do without the services of center Aliyah Boston, sidelined due to a right leg injury. Boston had been instrumental in their close 109-102 loss to the New York Liberty on Saturday, contributing 22 points and six assists.

“My mindset has never changed. I think it is what it is,” said Sophie Cunningham, expressing her focus on playing basketball. “I’m locked in on tonight. I think we’re just out here trying to get the win.”

The game also marked the first meeting between the Fever and Sky since the altercation involving DiJonai Carrington and Sophie Cunningham. Carrington had committed a hard foul on Cunningham, leading to a confrontational exchange and her subsequent ejection from that earlier game. Despite the history, Sunday’s game saw no major issues between the two players. Cunningham and Carrington checked into the game with a few minutes left in the first quarter. In limited action, Cunningham scored three points in the first half, while Carrington contributed four points.

Sky coach Tyler Marsh downplayed the previous tension, stating, “That kind of was what it was last game, and anything that came out of it kind of lasted for that time. But for us, it was on to the next one.”

Adding to the drama, former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom was ejected during the third quarter following a verbal confrontation with Natasha Cloud. Kanter Freedom, seated courtside, wore a shirt with a controversial message, which led to the altercation. Security intervened, and Kanter Freedom was escorted out of the arena.

In other updates, Kanter Freedom and another ex-NBA player, Royce White, had recently announced their intent to enter the WNBA draft, identifying as women.

The Chicago Sky is set to face the Connecticut Sun in their upcoming game on Tuesday night, while the Indiana Fever will host the Sun on Friday night.
