Illegal Immigrant Accused in California Murder After Jail Release

An illegal immigrant from Venezuela is accused of fatally stabbing a California father in a sanctuary city. The incident happened just a day after a local judge released the suspect on his own recognizance. Federal authorities have since requested California Governor Gavin Newsom to hand over the suspect for deportation.

A separate case involves Isaac Melendez-Carranza, a 31-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, who faces charges for allegedly distributing fentanyl near a Virginia high school. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that he had been ordered for deportation in 2024 but was apprehended at the Texas border in 2016 and later released on bond.

Melendez-Carranza was arrested on August 20 and charged with distributing fentanyl within 1,000 feet of a school. Currently, he remains detained without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. ICE issued a detainer for Melendez-Carranza, confirming a final removal order from July 2024.

Authorities linked Melendez-Carranza to drug overdoses at Park View High School in May. During a search of his home, deputies discovered approximately 100 pills and $1,000 in cash. Loudoun County Public Schools reported multiple student hospitalizations due to suspected overdoses, though it couldn’t confirm controlled substances were involved.

Sheriff Mike Chapman expressed concern over illicit drugs reaching students and confirmed that more arrests might follow Melendez-Carranza’s case. ICE plans to take custody of Melendez-Carranza after his state charges are concluded.

Under federal policies, ICE targets illegal immigrants charged or convicted of U.S. crimes, aiming to enforce removals effectively.
