Growing Influence of Democratic Socialists in Colorado

Colorado congressional candidate Melat Kiros attributed attacks on Jewish individuals in various countries to Israel’s activities in the Middle East during an interview on Wednesday.

Kiros represents a wave of anti-Israel, far-left candidates gaining traction within the Democratic Party. Her primary victory in the Denver area district unseated the longstanding incumbent Diana DeGette, reflecting a shift similar to what occurred in New York during recent primaries.

Phil Weiser, Colorado Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, has voiced concerns about Kiros’s reluctance to label a deadly attack on a pro-Israel rally in Boulder last year as antisemitic. This concern emerged during earlier discussions in the week.

During a conversation about potential collaboration with Weiser, Kiros expressed her willingness to engage in discussions. She emphasized the need to address rising antisemitism:

“At the end of the day, what happened in Boulder was a horrific attack on Jewish people peacefully protesting. We need to prioritize combating the hate and antisemitism that is escalating as a result of actions in the Middle East.”

Kiros has expressed eagerness to collaborate with Weiser in efforts to tackle these issues effectively.

Boulder Attack Incident

The attack by Mohamed Soliman targeted a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder on June 1, 2025. The tragic event resulted in the death of 82-year-old Karen Diamond and left several others injured.

Soliman, who was identified as the attacker, posed as a gardener before executing the attack. His actions involved throwing incendiary devices at the protestors.

He was charged with murder, pleaded guilty, and received a life sentence without parole. During his trial, Soliman expressed remorse for his crimes and argued for the death penalty, despite denying hatred towards Jews and voicing strong anti-Zionist sentiments.

Federal hate crime charges may still result in the death penalty for Soliman.

Campaign Focus

Kiros centered her campaign on opposing Israel, making it a focal point in her victory speech. She expressed commitment to ending what she referred to as “genocide in Palestine.” Her campaign’s success indicates growing acceptance of far-left views within the party.
