Green Bay Packers Struggle in Season Opener Against Vikings

The Green Bay Packers played their first significant game of the season on Sunday, marking their return to the field since a tough playoff loss. Last January, the Packers were outscored 25-6 in the fourth quarter of a 31-27 defeat by the Chicago Bears in the Wild-Card Round. Shortly after the playoffs, the team extended contracts for head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst.

In Sunday’s game, the Packers initially led 22-10 in the third quarter. However, the Minnesota Vikings, with backup quarterback Carson Wentz, scored the last 29 points. This resulted in a 39-22 victory for the Vikings, witnessed by a crowd of 66,940 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“You are making a coach something he’s not,” True remarked. “He’s capable of blowing the game at any time, regardless of the lead.”

With a current six-game losing streak, the Packers have repeatedly conceded double-digit leads. They did so twice against the Bears, once against the Denver Broncos, and most recently on Sunday against the Vikings. This has understandably caused frustration among fans, some calling for changes.

Steve “Homer” True, speaking on ESPN Madison, expressed his concerns. He suggested that the Packers consider dismissing LaFleur despite his new contract. True criticized LaFleur’s coaching abilities and doubted the team’s decision-making.

While some are quick to call for LaFleur’s removal, the season is still in its early stages. The Packers face challenges but have opportunities for improvement. The return of Micah Parsons from an ACL injury and the potential activation of Josh Jacobs from the commissioner exempt list could positively impact the team.
