Grant Umbright’s Leadership and Impact
Naperville Central senior Grant Umbright consistently displayed a reassuring demeanor that instilled confidence in his teammates. Whether pitching, playing third base, batting, or running, his calm presence was always evident. Junior outfielder Jermaine Kenady expressed admiration, stating, “Grant is just amazing. He gives us courage to be aggressive, so any time he’s on the mound, we know that it’s time to go.”
Outstanding Performances
Umbright, named the 2026 Naperville Sun Baseball Player of the Year, excelled in multiple roles. Committed to John A. Logan College, he led the pitching staff with a 9-1 record, a 2.03 ERA, and 71 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. As a third-place hitter, he batted .324, leading the team in triples, home runs, RBIs, and runs.
Redhawks’ Achievement
His contributions aided the Redhawks, who won 31 games and captured a state trophy after reaching the Class 4A state semifinals. Their victory streak included the moment Umbright supported Kenady when he lost a ball in the lighting, showing leadership by encouraging his teammate instead of criticizing.
“He doesn’t let one moment take him out of the game,” Kenady remarked, appreciating Umbright’s composure.
Coaching and Development
Coach Mike Stock noted Umbright’s development, highlighting increased command, which influenced others’ performance. A turning point came in Florida during spring break, as the team warmed up with wins and built momentum.
A Unique Season
Despite lacking Division I commitments, the Redhawks flourished under Umbright’s leadership, who was the last of three brothers to play for the program. Stock praised Umbright’s family and presence, emphasizing team chemistry and morale.
Team Brotherhood
Umbright reflected on his enjoyable varsity experience, highlighting team support and camaraderie. Senior catcher Ashton Feldott adapted to Umbright’s 94 mph fastball, noting the challenge and thrill of catching his precise throws.
Pitching Skills
Umbright’s pitching skills baffled hitters, especially through a change-up slower than his fastball. Feldott mentioned that the unpredictability often pressured hitters to struggle.
Future Prospects
Despite potential as a hitter, Umbright anticipated focusing solely on pitching at John A. Logan. He acknowledged goals for physical development, noting weight room efforts and additional areas for improvement with collegiate guidance.
Umbright’s contributions and leadership remain integral to Naperville Central baseball, leaving a lasting impact on his team and their success.
