Governor Abbott Appoints Don Huffines as State Comptroller

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas announced on Thursday the appointment of Don Huffines as the state comptroller. This decision aligns with a Republican strategy to strengthen party unity ahead of the midterms.

Don Huffines, previously a political adversary of Abbott, is known for his strong conservative stance in Texas politics. Formerly a state senator and a Dallas-area real estate mogul, Huffines ran against Abbott in the 2022 gubernatorial election. He challenged Abbott, arguing for a more conservative approach.

Amidst efforts by Democrats, who are anticipating a favorable national political climate this fall, Abbott and fellow Texas Republicans aim to resolve internal disputes within the party.

Huffines recently secured the Republican nomination for the comptroller position after winning the primary in March. He triumphed over acting comptroller Kelly Hancock, who was initially appointed by Abbott and had his endorsement. Hancock announced he would vacate the comptroller position by the end of the month.

During the announcement, Abbott commended Huffines for his blend of business acumen and conservative values, considering them crucial for the role. He praised Huffines as a leader who prioritizes taxpayers.

The state comptroller role is significant, overseeing public accounts and gaining political importance for Governor Abbott. The office also manages Abbott’s program to allocate public funds for private school education, a controversial initiative opposed by Democrats and some rural Republicans. This voucher program is gearing up for its debut school year in the fall.
