As Congress works on a third reconciliation package, the Chairman of the Republican Study Committee shared an upbeat perspective in a discussion on the Ruthless Podcast. Representative August Pfluger, R-Texas, stated that efforts are underway to tackle affordability, fraud, and defense.
Reconciliation is a budget tool that allows the Senate to pass bills with a simple majority, bypassing the 60-vote filibuster requirement. This process is primarily used for budget-related legislation.
“On affordability, on fraud, and on defense, I think that we’re going to run a two-minute drill,” said Pfluger in the interview.
The House plans to vote soon on a second reconciliation bill focused on immigration, which the Senate recently approved. Pfluger expressed frustration over the necessity to use reconciliation for funding the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Patrol.
Pfluger remarked, “It is a sad state of affairs when you have to do partisan-only bills like reconciliation, especially for defense-related things.” Podcast co-host Josh Holmes echoed this sentiment, pointing out that issues requiring a consensus have been forced onto a partisan path.
This third reconciliation bill aims to address key issues like housing, energy, and healthcare, alongside the core themes of affordability, fraud, and defense.
“3.0 is different,” Pfluger explained. “3.0 is us going into our districts, listening to our constituents.” He emphasized the importance of addressing rising costs set in motion by inflation, attributing blame to President Biden’s policies.
Looking ahead to the midterm elections, Pfluger stressed the need to energize Republican voters, highlighting the significance of addressing constituent concerns about fraud and financial instability.
Fraud has become a central focus for Republicans leading up to the elections. A Fraud Task Force led by Vice President JD Vance has identified significant government waste, with improper Medicaid payments highlighted as a major issue.
Pfluger’s discussions form part of the Ruthless Midterm Interview Series, which includes conversations with key candidates nationwide. This initiative is aimed at gauging strategies and priorities ahead of the November 3rd general elections.
