Despite signing a one-year franchise tag tender, the Dallas Cowboys face uncertainty with star wide receiver George Pickens. The immediate concern is whether Pickens will attend the team’s mandatory minicamp next week, having skipped the organized team activities (OTAs).
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb express confidence that Pickens will be present when required. However, his history of challenging authority during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers leaves others doubtful.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cautions Pickens about the importance of attending the minicamp. Florio highlights that Pickens should embrace the chance to prove his previous three years in Pittsburgh were an anomaly, focusing on his recent performance in Dallas. Florio emphasizes that Pickens needs to attend the minicamp to avoid speculation about his motives, especially since he could incur $100,000 in fines by missing it after signing the tender.
“Pickens embracing the one-year deal and hoping to show that the three years in Pittsburgh were the aberration, the trend is what he did last year in Dallas,” Florio stated. “If he doesn’t show up after signing the tender, questions will arise about his intentions. Why risk fines when he could delay accepting the tender until after the mandatory minicamp?”
This situation raises a critical question for the Cowboys about Pickens’ mindset and readiness to quell doubts to secure a substantial contract in the future. Whether he is prepared to meet these expectations or if uncertainties linger will be significant for his career.
The possibility of Pickens holding out or attempting to force a trade is a concern until he attends the minicamp. Nonetheless, reports suggest Dallas does not plan to trade Pickens, and he aims to play the 2026 season to earn a lucrative contract extension the following year.
