Freshman Addy Mikolanis of Lake Central has participated in two varsity games this season. Both were against Crown Point, including the Class 4A Lake Central Sectional championship game. Confronting a formidable opponent, Mikolanis felt comfortable in the high-stakes environment. She expressed gratitude for her teammates’ support during the games. Mikolanis emphasized the strong backing from her defense and catcher Madi Wainwright, which boosted her confidence.
Mikolanis performed impressively by pitching five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, while striking out two. This helped Lake Central secure a 3-1 win over Crown Point, the defending state champions. Lake Central, ranked No. 1 by state coaches, will compete against Hobart in a regional after sweeping regular-season games against No. 2 Crown Point.
Lake Central’s coach Yvette Tovar highlighted Mikolanis’s significance this season. Despite mostly playing JV games, Mikolanis stepped up and handled pressure well during the championships. Tovar noted her preparation through offseason and JV experience, which prepared her to face Crown Point.
Tegan Tripp, a senior third baseman with Virginia Tech recruitment, noted Mikolanis’s confidence and readiness despite nervousness. She praised Mikolanis for enabling fielding opportunities for the defense, even with few strikeouts, reinforcing the cooperative success of the team.
Another freshman, Colbie Tressel, started the championship game, conceding a run in two innings before Mikolanis took over. Tressel valued her coach’s trust and felt supported by her team. Tovar recognized Tressel’s capability in high-profile games, assured by her travel ball experience.
Lake Central’s junior ace Maddie Such, committed to Kentucky, was on standby but remained uninvolved due to the freshmen’s strong performance. Tovar recounted having Such ready to play, acknowledging her leadership among pitchers and her motivating presence, aiding the younger players in handling pressure situations.
Such’s guidance and motivation were pivotal, as Tovar sought experienced support for rookies like Mikolanis and Tressel. Such’s leadership helped build the younger players’ confidence during critical situations, contributing significantly to the team’s success.
