Francesca Hong’s Comments on Thanksgiving Stir Debate

Francesca Hong, a well-known democratic socialist and candidate for Wisconsin governor, is attracting attention for her recent remarks about Thanksgiving. During an interview with CNN’s ‘The Source with Kaitlan Collins,’ Hong addressed the controversy surrounding a past social media post where she advocated for the cancellation of Thanksgiving.

When asked by Collins if she still believes Thanksgiving should be canceled, Hong, a chef and restaurant owner, highlighted her experiences in hospitality. She shared that her first community meal at 16 was a Thanksgiving meal and acknowledged the value of gatherings. However, she expressed that Thanksgiving can also be painful for many in the community, noting the importance of evolving views.

Hong, who has been in the Wisconsin state assembly and is from Madison, stressed her background as a chef could enhance her ability to unite people as governor.

“But Thanksgiving is also a time that’s incredibly painful for many people in our communities,” Hong continued. “And so I think there, I wanted to make sure that people understood that there are multiple views, but views can evolve.”

The controversy began with a now-deleted 2020 social media post where Hong drew comparisons between the pandemic and Thanksgiving. She criticized the holiday for its colonial history and referenced smallpox spread among Indigenous peoples.

In response to questions about canceling Thanksgiving, Hong’s campaign clarified she does not intend to cancel the holiday. Her stance has amused conservative commentators, labeling her statements as confusing.

Hong continues to share her views on social media, including posts about personal experiences. She has significant support from progressives, such as Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna.
