Fort Hood Helicopter Crash and Resulting Wildfire Triggers Evacuations

Two individuals died in a crash involving a Fort Hood AH-64 Apache attack helicopter in Central Texas. The incident also sparked a wildfire, leading to evacuations and a substantial emergency response, according to authorities.

The Bell County Sheriff’s Office reported the crash occurred at about 1:34 p.m. The helicopter went down in a field south of Salado, roughly 30 minutes from Fort Hood, off Dove Hollow Lane.

Cliff Coleman, a spokesman for the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, described the crash as violent. He confirmed that two people died, but no additional injuries were reported. Initially, the aircraft was believed to be from Fort Hood. The military later confirmed it as an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter based there. The identities of those who died have not been released.

Fort Hood officials, along with local emergency services, military responders, and law enforcement, actively managed the situation. Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, stated, “Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts. Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”

The crash led to a wildfire, prompting significant emergency responses, road closures, and evacuations. As of 4 p.m. ET, the fire remained uncontrolled, leading to some resident evacuations. The incident closed Farm to Market Road 2843 near the crash site.

Salado Fire/Bell County ESD #1 addressed a significant grass fire along FM 2843, warning the public about impassable roadways and urging alternate routes.

Fort Hood confirmed it is leading the investigation into the incident. The cause of the crash has not been released to the public. Abhiram Garapati, a Texas congressional candidate, offered prayers for the victims and first responders on Facebook.
