A former San Francisco deputy police chief, Ann Mannix, and her daughter have died in a suspected murder-suicide. The incident, involving Mannix’s husband, Kevin Mannix, a retired San Francisco Police sergeant, unfolded according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
Ann Mannix, aged 65, was a trailblazing SWAT commander. Her daughter Katie, who was 24, and Kevin Mannix, aged 68, were also identified among the deceased. Marin County Sheriff’s public information officer, Miguel Almaguer, stated it appears to be a double-murder suicide, with Kevin Mannix identified as the shooter. He did not provide further details on evidence found at the scene.
“The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals,” Almaguer said.
The tragedy occurred in Mill Valley, discovered after deputies responded to a 911 call on Sunday around 5 p.m. The caller, another resident of the home, had escaped safely and reached out to law enforcement. Upon entry, deputies found the three family members dead.
Autopsies for all victims were scheduled for Tuesday.
Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, expressed deep sadness and shock over the incident. He noted Ann Mannix’s significant contributions, including being the first woman to join and lead the SWAT team. She was also active in promoting youth sports within the community.
“The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix has left our entire SFPD family reeling,” Wong said.
Lou Barberini, a former San Francisco police officer and columnist, remembered Ann Mannix as a talented individual, both as an athlete and a police officer. “Ann was very competent and well-liked,” Barberini stated.
San Francisco police have yet to comment further on this development.
