Florida Gubernatorial Race: Donalds vs. Jolly

1 hour ago 0

Nominees for Florida Governor

Republican Byron Donalds and Democrat David Jolly have been selected as their respective parties’ nominees for the Florida governor race. Florida, a state trending Republican in recent years, had seen Donald Trump win by about 13 points in 2024 and Ron DeSantis secure reelection by almost 20 points in 2022. Republicans also enjoy a significant registration advantage and benefit from a new congressional map that leans in their favor. These factors position Donalds as the predicted leader.

Polls Indicate a Closer Contest

Polling data suggests Jolly could contest more strongly than expected. A University of North Florida survey conducted in July 2026 showed Donalds with 46% against Jolly’s 41%, a narrower margin compared to past Republican wins. The poll also noted that 5% preferred other options, 2% opted not to vote, and 6% were undecided. Particularly among non-party affiliates, Donalds leads Jolly by just one point, 39% to 38%.

Different surveys paint varied pictures. A Targoz Market Research poll in July placed Donalds ahead by 7 percentage points. Meanwhile, Stetson University suggested a similar 7-point lead for Donalds, revealing a potentially competitive race ahead.

Expert Insights

Professor Craig Agranoff from Florida Atlantic University noted that while Florida’s recent political landscape tilts Republican, local issues and midterm dynamics could make for an unexpectedly tight contest. Although the fundamentals favor Republicans, if independents lean towards Jolly and economic issues play a major role, Democrats might edge closer than anticipated.

Prediction Markets and Analysis

Prediction markets are less favorable for Jolly. Sites like Kalshi and Polymarket give Republicans an approximately 83% chance of winning. Donalds benefits from Trump’s endorsement and strong party backing, making the race challenging for Jolly, who seeks to win as a Democrat in a state where his party has struggled.

Despite these hurdles, Jolly’s moderate stance and unique background as a former Republican might attract independents and disillusioned Republicans. The Cook Political Report rates this race as a solid Republican hold, but Democrats are hopeful for a breakthrough.

Democratic Outlook and Challenges

The Democrats maintain some optimism due to recent unexpected wins in legislative special elections. Such victories indicate that Republican dominance in Florida is not unassailable. Jolly’s effort requires consolidating Democratic support, gaining a significant share of independents, and persuading some Republicans to cross party lines.

While Donalds is the front-runner, if Jolly manages to shift the current polling from a minor deficit to a consistent lead, Florida’s 2026 governor’s race could become a pivotal contest in the national landscape.
