The global governing body of soccer, FIFA, has implemented a ban on refillable water bottles in all stadiums hosting the 2026 World Cup. This prohibition forms part of its official code of conduct and applies to venues in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In prior tournaments, certain sealed beverages were occasionally allowed, but this new rule marks a significant shift. The organizers aim to enhance safety measures and streamline security processes with this restriction.
Fans attending matches will now have no choice but to purchase beverages from stadium vendors. This change raises concerns about potential increases in prices and availability, especially during events held in hot weather conditions.
A FIFA spokesperson commented, “FIFA is dedicated to ensuring the safety and health of players, referees, fans, volunteers, and staff. Banning bottles helps prevent any hazards posed to players and attendees.”
This restriction on water bottles is one amongst numerous items now barred from stadiums. The list includes various containers and larger bags, as FIFA seeks to tighten regulations for the enlarged event.
