FIFA President Defends Organization Amid World Cup Controversies

As the world prepared for soccer’s eagerly awaited World Cup, faced with controversies and criticism, FIFA president Gianni Infantino maintained a resolute stance. Speaking on Wednesday, Infantino emphasized FIFA’s diligent efforts despite not having control over everything.

Addressing these issues in Mexico City, Infantino defended FIFA’s handling of topics like high ticket prices, visa challenges, and Iran’s participation in the tournament. Negative feedback over the organization’s policies has been notable, especially following investigations by New York and New Jersey attorneys general. These investigations focus on FIFA’s ticket pricing practices and potential misleading of buyers. Ticket prices had risen to ten times those of the previous tournament. Infantino expressed confidence, stating FIFA had sought legal advice before ticket sales. He remarked, “If we’ve done anything wrong, everyone in North America might be selling tickets wrong too.”

Despite criticisms, Infantino highlighted FIFA’s commitment to investing its revenue in global soccer development. He earns a salary of approximately $6 million.

Recently, the exclusion of a Somali referee assigned to officiate the World Cup sparked further scrutiny. Omar Artan was denied entry into the U.S. and sent back to Turkey. Infantino expressed sympathy for Artan, acknowledging the criticism yet urging moderation. “We’re doing our best,” Infantino said.

This incident added to the strain as Iran prepared to compete amidst ongoing conflict with World Cup host, the United States. Visas for the Iranian team were only secured 10 days prior, leading them to relocate to Tijuana instead of their planned base in Arizona. Infantino lauded FIFA’s role in facilitating the team’s participation, asserting that no other organization could have succeeded. He playfully stated he would have personally driven the team from Tehran if necessary.
