An explosion in southwestern Pakistan resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people, with several others injured, following a bomb blast near a passenger train. This event occurred amidst ongoing violence related to separatist insurgency in the region.
The incident took place around 8 a.m. local time in Balochistan Province, near Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan, an area known for the presence of militant groups. These groups have escalated their violent activities in recent years.
The explosion affected a shuttle train carrying dozens of passengers, including personnel from a local military base, as it approached the main railway station in Quetta, the provincial capital. According to Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Pakistan’s railway minister, the blast was powerful enough to derail the train engine and cause at least three coaches to overturn.
Passengers on the train were likely traveling to visit family for Eid al-Adha, which is set to be celebrated in Pakistan on Wednesday. The train was en route to connect with the Jaffer Express, a crucial rail line linking Quetta with major cities across Pakistan.
Shahid Rind, a provincial government official, confirmed the death toll of at least 14 people. Other sources from law enforcement and health officials in Quetta, who requested anonymity, reported over 20 bodies, including those of women and children, were taken to a hospital, and more than thirty others sustained injuries.
Initial investigations by police and provincial officials imply the possibility of a suicide bombing, though the bomb disposal squad has not released a conclusive assessment yet.
