Explosion Outside NYC Federal Building Prompts Emergency Response

An explosion occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza in New York City on Monday morning, triggering a fire and a significant emergency response. The building, located in Lower Manhattan, houses agencies such as the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One person was taken into custody following the incident.

According to the FDNY, four individuals sustained minor injuries that were not life-threatening. Three of them declined medical transport, while one was transported to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

An individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza. The individual has been taken into custody, and the FBI New York Office is investigating the incident.

The FDNY reported receiving a call at 8:30 a.m. about an outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza, situated between Worth Street and Lafayette Street. In response, two engine companies and two ladder companies were dispatched to the location. The FDNY confirmed just before 11 a.m. that the scene was secured, and no department units remained on site.

New York City Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed concern and relief on social media, stating his administration’s commitment to supporting the federal investigation and ensuring the safety of New Yorkers. He emphasized accountability for those who pose threats to the city’s safety.

Federal authorities revealed that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is handling the investigation of this incident. Officials were working to determine the explosion’s cause, with no serious injuries reported at the time.

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York praised law enforcement for their prompt actions in thwarting the attack and capturing the suspect. He condemned acts of terror and violence, affirming their unacceptability and emphasizing the importance of prosecuting the responsible individual to the fullest extent of the law.
