Evacuations Intensify as Chemical Leak Crisis Worsens in Garden Grove

Multiple emergency shelters have been set up to accommodate residents displaced by a hazardous chemical incident in Garden Grove. The Orange County Fire Authority announced on social media that Kennedy High School in La Palma was added to the list of shelters late Friday night. Other shelters include Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach, Savanna High School in Anaheim, and Freedom Hall at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Denise Guerrero, a 70-year-old resident of Garden Grove, recounted her experience with the evacuations. Accompanied by her rescue dog Archie, she explained that her proximity to the chemical tank at GKN Aerospace necessitated multiple evacuations within two days. Despite being familiar with the American Red Cross, Guerrero felt that authorities could improve direct communication with evacuees, as most updates were shared among residents through online platforms.

The American Red Cross has been working inside the Kennedy High gymnasium, providing meals and bedding for evacuees. The evacuation centers have received support from various community groups, including local police and volunteers.

Garden Grove Police Lt. Kory Ferrin stated, “We’re ensuring evacuees have sufficient food, medical supplies, and bedding. The coordination with the Red Cross has been effective so far.”

Firefighters stabilized the tank temperature at approximately 90 degrees Celsius, yet concerns remain over two severe outcomes: a possible explosion or a chemical spill involving 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA). Nick Freeman, a hazardous materials program manager, noted that the tank’s cooling system failed on Thursday, which initially triggered the evacuation. Firefighters are continuously monitoring the tank temperature, prepared for a potential emergency response.

Residents, like Tricia Quach from Buena Park, faced challenges explaining the situation to their children and taking precautions despite living near the evacuation zone boundary. Evacuees at shelters shared their hesitation and uncertainties about returning home, highlighting the need for guidance and regular updates from authorities.

Others, including Yoshi Nakashini and his family, faced logistical challenges in securing pet-friendly accommodations, reflecting the complexities faced by evacuees in a prolonged crisis.

The incident has strained emergency resources. As temperatures rise, fire authorities emphasize precaution and preparation, worrying that a significant chemical reaction could lead to catastrophic outcomes. Drones are being employed to gauge real-time temperature changes of the tank, offering critical data that informs safety protocols.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in response to the disaster, pledging state resources to support local authorities and ensure community safety. Residents are advised to comply with evacuation orders while officials continue to manage the escalating situation.

As the holiday weekend approached, the financial burden on evacuees grew, with hotel prices surging, further complicating efforts to secure temporary accommodation. Additionally, altered civic functions like changes to voting sites posed ongoing challenges to evacuees seeking assistance.
