Enhanced Security Measures in Place for Bay Area Ahead of Super Bowl

3 months ago 0

In preparation for the upcoming Super Bowl, an increased presence of law enforcement will be visible throughout the Bay Area, according to Jeff Brannigan, the federal coordinator from the Department of Homeland Security. In an interview with ABC News, he shared insights into the extensive security operations underway.

“We are coordinating multiple command centers working alongside our local partners,” Brannigan explained to ABC News, highlighting the collaborative effort happening across various governmental levels. He noted that both visible and undercover agents are participating in these operations.

The Super Bowl has been designated a SEAR 1 event, which necessitates comprehensive federal security involvement. Brannigan emphasized that the federal government is providing resources to support the security strategies of Santa Clara, San Francisco, and San Jose, along with enhancing capacities these cities may lack. This all-encompassing security strategy includes air, maritime, and on-ground support.

Support from federal agencies will include contributions from the FBI; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the U.S. Coast Guard; and aerial surveillance by Customs and Border Protection. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and specialized helicopters surveying for nuclear threats will also participate.

“There are hundreds of federal special agents across the government working hand-in-hand with local police departments to ensure safety during the event,” Brannigan described, noting the extensive personnel involved.

In addition to this federal presence, Brian Clark from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Pacific and Southwest region stated that the DEA would also support local and state law enforcement. He noted the increased risk of human and drug trafficking during large-scale events like the Super Bowl, warning attendees of the dangers associated with fentanyl.

Law enforcement from surrounding regions will join local forces under a “mutual aid” strategy, Brannigan mentioned, to bolster security capabilities for the event.

Among potential threats being monitored are those posed by lone attackers, drones, and cyber incidents. Brannigan urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities they encounter.

“Often, individuals may notice something amiss but dismiss it as inconsequential,” he stated. “It is crucial for the public to inform the police about any suspicious observations so they can be adequately investigated.”
