Elgin Fringe Fest Celebrates 13 Years with Eclectic Performances

The Elgin Fringe Fest is marking its 13th year, offering over 80 performances across various genres such as dance, theater, music, comedy, and magic. The event will be held from Wednesday to Sunday at five venues in downtown Elgin.

Festival entry buttons are priced at $4, with performance tickets ranging from free to $12. A festival pass is available for $95 at Side Street Studio Arts, granting access to all events at locations including Elgin Public House, Habitat for Humanity, Martini Room, and Elgin Art Showcase.

This festival has always been adept at finding ways to thrive, in both challenging and prosperous times, said Fringe artistic director Nick Mataragas.

The festivities begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, with a preview party at the Martini Room, where artists will provide show teasers. At 7 p.m., the new Fringe Cabaret, hosted by comedian Jose Alfredo, will take place.

Special events include the Almost-Closing Party at 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, after the event’s busiest day. The official After Party happens at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 27. According to Mataragas, these events provide a chance to celebrate the festival’s happenings, successes, and challenges, and to bid farewell to the touring artists.

A variety of acts are scheduled, including The Snake Oil and Skullduggery Show (improv), Tap Into Time by Gregg and Katie, Twilight-ish the Musical by Slapdash Theatre, and The Lunatic’s Fringe: An Enigmatic Multimedia Driven Rock Spectacle by The Lunatic’s Fringe. Other performances include A Play I Wrote in Fourth Grade by Claire Jolie Goodman, Weird Jazz by Grey Noise, and Over Qualified for this Disaster by Tricia Babischkin.

Fringe-goers should visit elginfringefestival.com to plan, as the schedule is organized by day, genre, and venue. This year brings innovative storytelling tactics, said Mataragas, with performances that challenge preconceived notions.

One of the storytellers featured is Lauren Kee from Chicago. She will present her one-woman show, Dealbreaker, on September 24 and 26 at the Elgin Public House. Her show delves into how the herpes virus impacts her life, mixing comedy, storytelling, and sex education. My show is discussing something few address, said Kee.
