Ed Sheeran Addresses Fans Amid Controversy Over Macklemore Exit

During his recent performance at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Ed Sheeran addressed fans following controversy over Macklemore’s removal from his tour. Sheeran expressed his regret and apologized for any disappointment among fans.

He began by reflecting on recent criticism, emphasizing the importance of addressing significant issues. Sheeran stated, “I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes. I’m so, so sorry. I don’t want to disappoint fans.”

Sheeran also tackled the sensitive topic of his stance on the Israel and Palestine conflict. Stressing his preference to remain apolitical in his career, he said, “I want my music and shows to be about unity not division, about humanity not politics.” However, he recognized the humanitarian concern involved, commenting on the horrors faced by both Israelis and Palestinians.

He described the tragic events at a music festival in Israel and the devastating situation in Gaza. “What happened in Israel at a… music festival on Oct. 7 was horrific,” he remarked. Additionally, Sheeran called the circumstances in Gaza “catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

Sheeran emphasized the need for humanitarian action, saying, “My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives.” He mentioned his intention to contribute to efforts aimed at helping victims and admitted that he is still learning about the issue.

As Sheeran continued his performance, he admitted uncertainty about the audience’s response. “I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me,” he shared, noting that adjustments to the performance were made due to recent events.

Despite these challenges, Sheeran reaffirmed his commitment to his music and the power it has to unify people. “When my friends dropped out of this show, I was thinking, how am I going to keep the show the same,” he said before introducing his touring violinist, Alicia Enstrom.

The concert took place amid protests from Pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the venue, who displayed Palestinian flags and signs. This followed the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour after his controversial “Free Palestine” message at MetLife Stadium.

Sheeran clarified his perspective on Macklemore’s removal, explaining that it was a decision made by concert promoters and venues, not him. He voiced his distress over the conflict, labeling it “a human tragedy,” and pointed to Instagram to share his statement in response to Macklemore’s accusations.
