Djokovic Faces Early Exit at 2026 U.S. Open Against Navone

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was defeated in the first round by Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the 2026 tournament. Navone claimed victory in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Djokovic, at 39 years old, faced significant challenges during the match. He committed 10 double faults and had 70 unforced errors. After the match, he mentioned struggling with physical issues throughout the year.

“It’s something that I’ve been dealing with in nearly every match this year,” Djokovic explained. “Vomiting, serious issues with cramping, and pain. My back and shoulder gave out, and I couldn’t finish strong.”

This loss marked Djokovic’s first exit in the opening round of the U.S. Open. He entered the competition as the fourth seed, having won the tournament three times in his career. Despite his efforts to regain control, he was unable to secure a decisive win against Navone.

Reflecting on the match, Djokovic shared his feelings on his performance: “I struggled from the fourth game onward. I didn’t feel good physically and didn’t enjoy being on the court.”

Meanwhile, Navone expressed mixed emotions about defeating an athlete he admired. He recognized the significance of playing against Djokovic, describing it as a complex moment.

“It was difficult because I was facing the ‘GOAT’ on this stage,” Navone said. “This win is the best experience for me on such a magnificent court. I’m very happy with how we played.”
