DHS Secretary Criticizes New York Leaders Over Operation Rotten Apple

During a recent press conference, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted the arrest of thousands in New York, identified as public safety threats through Operation Rotten Apple. Mullin criticized New York’s leadership, including Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, for not collaborating with law enforcement.

Operation Rotten Apple’s Impact

Mullin stated that Operation Rotten Apple targeted over 2,100 criminals throughout the state in just 30 days. He expressed concern over New York City’s leadership, claiming that Mayor Mamdani attempted to reduce the NYPD’s budget by $22 million and refused to cooperate with federal law enforcement.

Cases Involving Foreign Nationals

Mullin provided details on specific cases involving foreign nationals with violent criminal histories. One case involved a 39-year-old Indian national wanted by INTERPOL for an alleged rape in Germany. Another case involved a Ukrainian citizen with convictions including kidnapping and murder.

“These individuals should never have been on our streets. While radical-left sanctuary states protect illegal immigrants, the Trump administration and ICE officers are out there every day protecting Americans,” Mullin said.

Criticism of Sanctuary Policies and Local Leadership

Mullin criticized sanctuary policies, claiming they allow dangerous individuals to remain on the streets. He mentioned that New York’s politicians have facilitated the release of over 13,000 illegal immigrants and urged them to stop obstructing DHS and ICE operations.

287(g) Agreements and Cooperation

Criticism extended towards Governor Hochul for ending 287(g) agreements, which allow local police to work alongside federal agents. Mullin argued that cooperation with ICE contributes to the safety of cities, citing that the safest cities in the country maintain such cooperation.

He acknowledged local law enforcement’s desire to cooperate, despite political barriers, and thanked sheriffs who opposed local political interference.

Federal Reinforcement in Uncooperative Cities

Mullin stated the federal government is prepared to deploy additional agents to cities where leadership resists cooperation with federal law and immigration enforcement.

“Because local leadership refuses to cooperate through the 287(g) program, we will send as many personnel as necessary to restore law and order. President Trump loves New York and is committed to restoring safety here alongside ICE and DHS,” Mullin said.
