The week has seen significant financial moves for NFL running backs, with Detroit Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs leading the charge. On Thursday evening, Gibbs agreed to a three-year contract worth $67.5 million, featuring $51.5 million in guaranteed money. His agent, Todd France, announced this agreement via Instagram.
This deal sets Gibbs apart as he will earn an average of $22.5 million annually, the highest among NFL running backs. His exceptional performance draws comparisons to Barry Sanders, as Gibbs redefines playmaking in Detroit’s backfield.
In his first three seasons, Gibbs amassed 39 rushing touchdowns and 10 receiving touchdowns. His 20 touchdowns from scrimmage in 2024 led the league. Earlier, Jonathan Taylor secured a two-year extension with the Indianapolis Colts, averaging $22 million annually. Bijan Robinson followed with the Atlanta Falcons, at $22.25 million per season.
This surge for NFL running backs overtakes Saquon Barkley’s contract, previously considered the standard at $20.6 million per season since 2025. The Lions’ commitment to drafting and retaining players shines, having extended key talents like Aidan Hutchinson, Jack Campbell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and others.
Under Dan Campbell’s leadership, this strategy’s effectiveness is evident. The Lions claimed the NFC North in 2023, went to the NFC championship that year, and set a franchise-record 15 wins in 2024, returning to the playoffs last season.
Despite these achievements, the Lions still seek a Super Bowl title. The investment in player talents surpasses $800 million, signaling a strong push for the championship they aim for.
