Democrats in The Villages Find Their Voice

1 month ago 0

The Villages in Florida is one of the world’s largest retirement communities, traditionally known for its conservative stance. Residents with more liberal views previously kept quiet to avoid social exclusion. This atmosphere is changing with Vice President Kamala Harris running as the Democratic presidential candidate, prompting left-leaning inhabitants to speak up.

Diane Foley, president of the Villages Democratic Club, noted the group’s membership has nearly doubled to 1,500 since the last election cycle. Residents now more openly express their political preferences without fear, signaling a shift in the community. Golf carts adorned with pro-Harris decorations parade the streets, and second gentleman Doug Emhoff recently visited.

Despite this newfound openness, many still prefer to maintain silence on political matters to preserve neighborly relations. Howard and Janet Underwood, who were longtime Republicans, shifted to become independents post-2016 because of Donald Trump’s candidacy. While Howard assists with the Democratic club, he skips putting political stickers on his car due to potential backlash.

Glen and Suzi Smith, both active in the club, moved to the area despite its conservative reputation. They humorously remarked about infiltrating the community when questioned about their decision to live there. Dave Farraday, a Trump supporter, resides among neighbors with different political views but values harmony over debate.

Club meetings have attracted increasing attendance, requiring larger facilities to accommodate newcomers. Activist Barbara DeVane advocated for legalizing recreational marijuana during a meeting. Shelly Newman, a Democrat who moved to The Villages in 2013, emphasized the importance of proudly expressing political beliefs.

Overall, Democratic support is burgeoning, fueled by Vice President Harris’s candidacy. Residents like Patricia Coe, despite facing threats, continue their political engagement. The changing political climate is evident in discussions, gatherings, and community activities.
