Democrats have recently secured an advantage over Republicans on one of the nation’s critical issues: the economy. A new Fox News poll, released on Wednesday, highlights this shift. The July 2026 survey indicates Democrats have their strongest lead since 2006 in registered voters’ trust regarding economic management, signifying a significant change in public perception.
The poll results emerge as economic issues, such as inflation, affordability, and household finances, remain at the forefront of voters’ concerns leading up to the 2026 midterm elections. The survey also found President Donald Trump’s overall approval ratings are below favorable levels, particularly regarding his economic management.
Crime is one issue where Trump performs better; however, voter dissatisfaction over rising costs and inflation is growing. The Fox News survey shows Democrats leading in the generic House ballot as well, which suggests that economic concerns might influence upcoming congressional races if current trends hold.
According to the Fox News poll, when respondents were asked which party they believed would better manage the economy, 54 percent chose Democrats, while 45 percent supported Republicans, giving Democrats a net advantage of 9 points. This represents a notable improvement from April, when Democrats were at 52 percent compared to Republicans’ 48 percent. The last time Democrats had a similar lead was in July 2006.
The poll was conducted between July 17 and July 20, interviewing 1,003 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3 percent. Currently, Trump’s approval rating on the economy stands at 33 percent, with a 67 percent disapproval rating. A significant 54 percent of respondents believe the economy will worsen in the coming year, while 45 percent think it will improve. Overall, Trump’s approval rating is at 39 percent versus a 61 percent disapproval rating.
Independent polling highlights similar concerns among Republican voters, with a growing number indicating financial declines during Trump’s second term. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey reports an increase in Republicans feeling worse off financially, jumping from 13 percent to 18 percent.
Responding to these polls, White House Spokesman Kush Desai told Newsweek, “President Trump has always been clear about the fact that oil and gas prices—and thus overall inflation—will rapidly drop as soon as the Iran situation is resolved. American workers were also seeing wage gains before the war with Iran, and the administration’s commonsense agenda of deregulation, tax cuts, and energy abundance aims to deliver more economic relief for the American people.”
Other surveys echo findings of Trump’s low approval ratings on economic issues, reflecting widespread voter concern over current conditions. Poll results provide a window into public opinion rather than election predictions; yet, convergent data from several polls suggest potential shifts in the political landscape driven by economic matters. With voters continuing to prioritize issues like inflation and financial security, both parties are likely to focus heavily on economic messaging for the 2026 campaign.
Polling trends’ sustainability depends on how voters view economic prospects as Election Day nears.
Other recent polls reinforce these sentiments. A survey by The Economist/YouGov this week found 21 percent of respondents felt positive about the economy, while 75 percent considered it fair or poor. Additionally, 15 percent believed the economy is improving, 22 percent felt conditions remained the same, and 58 percent viewed economic conditions as worsening, with 6 percent uncertain. This poll surveyed 1,602 U.S. adults from July 17 to July 20, with a margin of error of 3.3 percent.
Another poll by the American Research Group places Trump’s economic approval at 28 percent, compared to a 70 percent disapproval rating. His overall approval rating is 30 percent with a 67 percent disapproval. This survey was conducted between July 16 and July 20 with 1,100 adults and a 3 percent margin of error.
